BarroMetrics Views: CANI

In Awaken The Giant, Anthony  Robbins coined the word: “CANI” - constant and never ending improvement.

I received a couple of e-mails that prompted me to revisit the idea. I said I’d answer the e-mails on my blog.

The thrust of the e-mails were twofold:

  1. If your methods make money, why are you teaching them
  2. Since you provide notes and videos, write books etc, aren’t you afraid that they’ll be copied?

Taking the questions in order:

I ‘teach’ for a variety of reasons.

Firstly I am not sure that ‘teach’ is not a misnomer. For in sharing my truths, I have received equal measure (if not more) in return. How so? Well, I have found that if we listen (to others and ourselves) when we teach, we’ll learn much. For example among this year’s attendees, Ling, Vincent, Joshua and Kane stand out. In answering their questions -  questions, I did not think of asking myself, I embarked on ‘CANI’.

Secondly. in teaching, I foster my own goal, of leaving a legacy.

Finally, I am good at it, and I actively seek to get better - reading books and courses, then practicing the new ideas so as to make them mine.

The answer to the second question is somewhat more difficult to answer. Ultimately it comes down to the lesser of two evils: the choice between being ripped off and reaching as many as possible.

Will some of my material be ripped off?  By ‘ripped off’ I mean a couple of things:

  1. Copied, sold and re-distributed
  2. Reproduced without acknowledgment of my original ideas.

The answer is: “Yes, I will be ripped off”.

Modern technology makes the it easy to do especially in the East, where copyright is a new idea in many parts. As a result, ‘copyright’  is given nought but lip service.

But, as I said, what is the alternative if I want to reach and help, as many as possible? Current protective means are unattractive.

For example, I could produce E-books that are unprintable. But despite. Kindle etc, many would be shut out. For example, I find reading a book electronically next to impossible. I’m sure there are many with similar issues. The printed medium is still the preferred mode for the majority, at least at the moment.

So, unless I want to stop communicating, my answer is to accept the reality and move on.
