BarroMetrics Views: Deep Practice

The heart of The Talent Code is Deep Practice. As Figure 1 shows, it has three main elements:

  1. Chunking Up and Down
  2. Repetition and
  3. ‘Feeling It’.

The ‘chunking process’ seeks to provide a context for the skill. We first take an overall view of the new lesson; then we break it down into it’s component parts; finally we practise it - in come activities e.g, in some sports,  we slow down the movements. But in trading, I recommend we use the simulation mode that some software provides. The idea behind using simulations is to have some dry runs as we learn a particular skill.

Repetition is the heart of Myelin - it is only through repetition that our  Myelin grows. The next step speeds up the growth.

“Feeling it’ means we set targets for a lesson just beyond our skill levels - not too far, because that will lead to frustration; not within our comfort zone because then the activity becomes boring. Once we have our target we act. The usual outcome is we’ll fall short of our target. By observing that gap and thinking through how we can bridge it, will cause Myeline to grow more rapidly. We then repeat the process until the new skill becomes part of our skill set.

Coyle suggests that one or two hrs per day of ‘Deep Practice’ is about what most of us can take.
